Covenant Theology

Posted by jahothanan on February 28, 2008

If you are not yet convinced of Covenant Theology, listen to this great sermon by the Rev. Robert Rayburn who gives an extremely strong case for it. I’d love to read your comments on this, especially if you disagree after listening to the sermon.

On a lot of theology, I think the majority of Christians don’t understand it. Often times, this is what I find when people want to criticize different theological perspectives (whether or not the perspective is right). There is just a very large lack of knowledge and understanding. It is important for us to undertake the task of thoroughly learning our own doctrine and theology, lest we find ourselves in apostasy. A good way to keep ourselves in check is to discuss it with other Christians to, in a certain sense, challenge ourselves to think logically about it.

Funny School Experience: The Battle with the Copier

Posted by jahothanan on February 20, 2008

I figured some of you might like to read a funny story, so here it is.

I was in the school library today, doing some research, because I have a “Special Topics Report” due tomorrow for my Intro to Shakespeare class. It was starting to get on my nerves because we are not allowed to have a thesis statement, which is exactly what I continually try to do. Anyway, a girl from my math class (Engineering major) walked up and wanted to know if she could borrow ten cents and my copier card to make a photo copy from a chemistry book. So, being the nice guy I am, I went to the coper with her and tried to swipe my copier card into the machine, but it wouldn’t take it. I then looked and it wanted my ID card, so I swiped that and then it said that I had no money in my account. A little annoyed I went over to the desk (followed by the girl who was continually apologizing for the hassle) and asked if I could get a new copier card and the lady at the desk said, “Oh we don’t do it that way anymore. Now your account is on your ID card.” I replied, “Oh, well what about my copier card?” So she took it and gave me a refund for the balance, which I turned around and put on my ID card account. Finally, the girl and I went back over to the copiers and someone else was using the copier we started with, so we went to the next one. We lifted the lid and put her book in and then closed the lid only to have the it fall off. The book was really thick, so we just put the lid on the book and held it down to make the copy and then tried to reattach it, which was semi successful. Afterward, the girl apologized profusely for the inconvenience (which it really wasn’t) and then after I assured her it was all okay, she left. The whole experience left me chuckling for a good while afterward.

I must say, I like the new developments as my college, but sometimes it gets a little difficult with them changing everything all the time. Eventually, I expect it will all work much better and more smoothly.

In other news, I applied to tutor in the Math advising Resource Center (the math tutoring center) and the job pays over $8 an hour, which makes me very happy and I look forward to doing it next quarter. It should cover my bus fair plus some.

Ghosts

Some people are very gullible. Way too gullible. Too bad we had to debunk them twice. Still, I think they get kicks out of it or something.

Bad habits

Posted by jahothanan on February 6, 2008

I think I have a bad habit of making people mad. It’s pretty easy in the second most liberal state in the union (if we are not the most liberal state yet). Oh well, best to press forward.

Makes me think of my sociology class last quarter. At the beginning, we were shown a report that claimed Tacoma was the most depressing city in the nation and then the teacher wanted to say that the report was not accurate because the people who live here think it is great. Over the course of the quarter (get it? course. never mind, it was a bad pun) we were given statistic after statistic that showed Washington state with the most suicides, high murders, most abortions, most divorces, etc. Afterward I had to wonder, “why is Tacoma not the most depressing city again?” Oh yeah, it is because we have rainy weather. Gotcha. ;)

Disciplines of a Godly Man Class

Posted by jahothanan on February 5, 2008

Recently, I started attending a Sunday school class for men. The topic is this book. We are supposed to read a chapter and memorize a verse each week. Then there is a lecture and a discussion group. Although the book is good, there isn’t anything particularly special about it. The class, in my opinion, is really good only because of the people in it. The structure isn’t anything special. I enjoy the leaders and having some other men to share experience with is really what makes it so notable. I don’t want this post to become a promo for my church, but I am always amazed by it and the people in it. (I consider myself somewhat of an authority on this :P since I have attended over thirty different churches of most major denominations and view points.) People outside of my church confirm its special influence, not only in my area, but across the country.

Anyway, back on subject, I am really blessed through this class (and my church in particular) because of the humbling experience it is to be among such really knowledgeable people who live the Christian life. It is very important for any good Christian, if they expect substantial growth in their walk with Christ, to surround themselves with other Christians who will make them grow and not stifle them. Solitude is never a good idea.

School on the web

Posted by jahothanan on February 2, 2008

Something I don’t really understand is why schools are trying to do more online stuff. I understand having online classes for people who have difficulty attending a class on campus, but when they have regular classes every day and then want us to do stuff online as well, things start getting really convoluted. I was supposed to take a quiz online today, but it isn’t up on Blackboard (the site my school uses for online things). It was supposed to be up there from 8 A.M. to 8 P.M., but it isn’t and I’m still waiting to hear back from my instructor about it. The other problem is that we were supposed to submit homework online and the homework site hasn’t set up their site to receive my class’s entry codes yet. Now we are almost halfway through the quarter and we are still handing in hand done homework. Sometimes I wonder why we bother with such impersonal web tools and don’t just do things the good old fashioned way, in the classroom. Oh well, that is enough ranting for me right now.
