Test your knowledge of economics!

Posted by jahothanan on March 31, 2008

If you are passing by, don’t leave until you give the following questions a shot. The answer doesn’t have to be right. It can be a guess.

What is economics?

What are prices?

What is supply and demand?

Define “economies of scale” and “diseconomies of scale.”

These are just a few questions that deal with basic economics. Recently, I was asked to lead a group of homeschool students in studying the book Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. If you don’t know anything about economics or even if you think you know everything about economics, you should read this book. You would be surprised. All of the above questions are part of a list of study questions I have been compiling to help with discussion and study. This should be fun!

Love, Marriage, and Courtship: Looking to Scripture part 1

Posted by jahothanan on March 20, 2008

My pastor once said that the only glimpse of a perfect marriage that we ever get in the Bible is in (surprisingly not Song of Solomon. Or maybe not so surprisingly ;) . ) Genesis 2:23.

The verse and the verses around it read, “21. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22. And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”

My pastor then continued by pointing out that the one thing we see is Adam worshiping his wife. That is all we get or ever will get from the Bible about a perfect marriage, an image of a husband worshiping his wife. Now one may or may not agree with the above statements, but it certainly makes one think. Why would this be what is shown us? How can this possibly be of any help? Now, I was rather surprised to hear this and at first I had misgivings about it, but the more I think about it, the more I think his statement could be of great help. Worship in the dictionary is an adoring reverence or regard for something or someone. But, if you look at the first definition, it mentions things that are sacred. Now think of this in terms of how you or anyone treats their spouse or sweetheart. Do they treat them as sacred? How could this change our behavior toward that person if he or she was sacred to us? It is amazing how differently one looks at the whole thing when we use this terminology.

More about school

Posted by jahothanan on March 14, 2008

I hope it doesn’t bother people if I decide to tell my school stories.

Tuesday: Math exam part 1. Wednesday: Math exam part 2. Thursday: Accounting exam. Friday: Math project due and Accounting quiz. Next week: Finals.

Who’s bright idea was it to put so many exams at the end of the quarter?! I’ve been running almost non-stop. Study-study-study. I took the second part of my math exam yesterday. I think I did well, but the last problem had me really stumped. Here it is for anyone who thinks they can take a shot at it.

A train and a car leave the same place at exactly 9am. The train travels north at 50mph while the car travels west at 65mph. How fast is the distance between them increasing at 11am?

The problem has to do with rates and related rates. I can figure it out once I have the equation, but finding the equation was hard for me. Here is the equation: D(t)=√((65t)^2+(50t)^2). And the derivative: D’(t)=√(65^2+50^2). That also happens to be the answer to the question.
I’m going to miss being in math next quarter. I’ve really gotten to like the students. Most of them are engineering students or math students and they are really fun to be around. Likable people.

Where are our theological thinkers?

Posted by jahothanan on March 11, 2008

I have a simple question to ask:

Why is it that people do not want to talk about theology?

I also have a simple answer:

Because people do not take the time to study it, think about it, or discuss it.

Too many people would rather go see the newest movie or go to their favorite band’s concert. We have been driven to a point where interest in theology and true intellectual study of it is not possible with our current life styles. I do not believe this is where we ought to be as Christians and I do not think this is where the Bible directs us (but unfortunately, it is where most pastors and church leadership direct us). Let us take to heart what the Bible says, challenging ourselves to live it daily in solemn prayer and meditation.

“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” -II Timothy 4:1-8 KJV

Recent events concerning a new book out, “Crazy for God,” really depress me. Frank Schaeffer is the author and, this is hard to say since Frank is Francis Schaeffer’s son, but he doesn’t have a sure foundation in his faith. I fear that Frank Schaeffer has not learned to properly apply much of what his father taught through his books, his video “How Shall We Then Live,” and his discussions at L’Abri. His doctrine is not sound doctrine. Obviously, his salvation is for God alone to judge, as it is for all of us, but to give up the fight his father fought, I believe, is wrong, however many fellow Christians offended him.

Let us brothers and sisters in Christ do the work needed to have a sure foundation in our own faith, not seeking recognition or fame or political gain or financial gain for our own glory, but seeking always to praise and give glory to God through His work. Let us do as God’s Word tells us:

“…follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:” -I Timothy 6:11-14 KJV

Proverbs 27:5-6

Posted by jahothanan on March 8, 2008

“Open rebuke is better than secret love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.”

I honestly get tired of people telling me not to rebuke others because we ought to “love” them (whatever that is supposed to mean). Somehow, I have not seen “remaining silent” as a way to love someone in Scripture. That seems to go hand-in-hand with  loving someone by not doing anything. Frankly, it isn’t possible. If people loved their spouses by not doing anything or remaining silent, their marriages would be disastrous.
